Overview

The intent for Oates was to carefully extend a Spanish Mission style workers cottage in Holland Park while retaining its original character and relationship to the site.

The project brief focused on increasing the home’s living space and improving functionality for contemporary family life. Embracing the natural slope of the land, the design preserves the existing cottage and introduces a new kitchen, living and dining addition to the rear.

A key move was the re-purposing of the original external stair, which is brought inside and becomes a central connecting element between old and new. This transition reinforces continuity through the home and provides a clear spatial link across levels.

The material palette is drawn directly from the existing cottage, with brick detailing extended into the new works. The continuation of brick through the stair and revised entry reaffirms the character of the original house while grounding the new spaces within its architectural language.
